Napping can have both advantages and disadvantages depending on a number of factors, such as now long you nap for and what time of the day you nap.
Some of the benefits of napping include:
- Increased alertness
- Improved mood
- Improved performance – memory and reaction time
There are, however drawbacks of napping for some:
- Sleep inertia – feeling groggy/disorientated
- Long naps may interfere with night time sleep, particularly for those who have insomnia or trouble sleeping
What makes the perfect nap?
Keep naps short, ideally 10-20 mins. The longer you nap, the more likely you are to feel groggy afterwards. Take naps early in the afternoon, napping after 3pm can interfere with your night time sleep routine. Find somewhere quiet, dark and comfortable to relax with no distractions. It’s a good idea to give yourself a little time to wake up after your nap rather than having to jump straight back to what you was doing.
